Accepted Diplomas

The list below shows secondary school diplomas that may, for the purpose of admission to the PPE programme of the John Stuart Mill College, be considered equivalent to the Dutch VWO (English proficiency, meeting our mathematics requirement  and a sufficient Grade Point Average are required for all!). This list is for general guidance only and no rights can be derived from it.

  • International diplomas: International Baccalaureate and European Baccalaureate
  • Albania: Dëftesë Pjekurie
  • Australia: High School diploma and at least 1 year academic education
  • Austria: Reifezeugnis from Allgemeinbildende Höhere Schule
  • Bulgaria: Diploma za Zavarsheno Sredno Obrazovanie (DZSO) + a class grade point average ≥ 5
  • Belgium: Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs (DSO) and Certificat d’Enseignement Secondaire Supérieure
  • Canada: High School Diploma (with English taught at secondary education) + at least 1 year academic education
  • Chile: Licencia de Enseñanza Media and at least 1 year academic education
  • China: Chinese students who wish to enroll in an English-taught program at a Dutch institute of higher education are required to apply for a Nuffic Certificate. Nuffic will send this certificate directly to the relevant Dutch institute of higher education once it has been issued. More information about the Nuffic Certificate for Chinese students.   • Croatia: Maturalna Svjedodzba and Diplôme d’Enseignement Secondaire Superieure and Matura (Gimnazija diploma)*
  • Czech Republic: Vysvědčení o maturitní zkoušce obtained at a Gymnázium*
  • Cyprus: Apolytirio Lykeio*
  • Denmark: Bevis for Studentereksamen and Højere Forberedelseksamen
  • Estonia: Gümnaasiumi Lõputunnistus
  • Finland: Studenteksamen/Ylioppilastutkinto
  • France: Diplôme du Baccalauréat Général/Baccalauréat de l’Enseignement du Second Degré (mathematics coefficient 4)
  • Germany: Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife (Abitur)
  • Greece: Apolytirio Lykeio*
  • Hungary: Gimnaziumi Érettségi Bizonyítvány*
  • Iceland: Stúdentspróf
  • Indonesia: SMA and 1 or 2 years academic education
  • Iran: High School and at least 2 years academic education
  • Iraq: Baccalaureat and at least 2 years academic education
  • Ireland: Leaving Certificate in 5 subjects (3 of which higher grade)
  • Italy: Diploma di Maturità/Superamento dell’esame di Stato Conclusivo
  • Israel: Te’udat Bagrut
  • Japan: High School diploma and at least 2 years academic education
  • Jordan: Certificate of General Secondary Education and at least 1 year academic education
  • Latvia: Atestāts par vispārējo vidējo izglītību
  • Lithuania: Brandos Atestatas
  • Luxembourg: Diplôme de Fin d’Etudes Secondaire, enseignement Classique ou Moderne
  • Malta: Matriculation Certificate with at least 3 subjects at Advanced level*
  • Morocco: Baccalaureat de l’Enseignement Secondaire + at least 1 year academic education
  • New Zealand: University Bursaries Examination in at least 4 subjects, with sufficient points for university admittance
  • Norway: Vitnemàl Videregâonde opplaering (studieretning for allmenne fag)
  • Poland: Swiadectwo Dojrzalosci Liceum Ogólnoksztalcacego*
  • Portugal: Diploma de Ensino Secondario with certificate of Concurso Nacional*
  • Romania: Diploma de Bacalaureat*
  • Russia: Attestat o Srednem Obshchem Obrazovanii*
  • Scotland: Scottish Certificate of Education (SCE) with 3 Advanced Higher Grades
  • Slovakia: Gymnázium Diploma*
  • South-Korea: High School and at least 1 year relevant academic education
  • Slovenia: Matura (Maturitetno Spricevalo / Gimnazija*
  • Spain: A score of ‘apte’ on the Prueba de Aptitud/Acesso or Título de Bachiller after successfully passing Prueba General de Bachillerato
  • Sweden: Slutbetyg från Gymnasieskolan
  • Switzerland: Maturitätszeugnis / Diplôme de Maturité
  • Thailand: Certificate of Secondary Education (‘Matayom 6’) and at least 1 year academic education
  • Turkey: Lise diplomasi and Öss Sonuç Belgesi (admission to a programme at a recognised university in Turkey)
  • United Kingdom: GCSE plus 3 GCE A-levels. Scotland: Scottish Certificate of Education (SCE) with 3 Advanced Higher Grades. The Cambridge Pre-University Diploma is also sufficient for general admission.
  • USA: An American High School Diploma is not equivalent to a Dutch VWO diploma, so you must also have 4 Advanced Placement Certificates, in one of two combinations: 2 APs language (of which one foreign language), 1 AP maths/science and 1 AP elective; or 1 AP foreign language, 2 APs maths/science and 1 AP elective. You can also apply if you have completed one year of full-time college or university credit.
  • Vietnam: Certificate of secondary school graduation (‘Bang Tot Nghiep Pho Thong Trung Hoc’) and 1 year university studying subjects relevant to the selected programme
