Barbara Vis (1979) is professor of Political Decision Making at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at VU Amsterdam. She studied economics and political science at the University of Amsterdam.

The research interests of Vis lie at the intersection of political science (especially comparative politics), behavioral economics, and psychology and are thus strongly interdisciplinary. She has worked on theories of decision-making under risk by political actors such as governments and political parties, the politics of welfare state reform, and comparative methods. She has published in leading journals in political science (e.g., American Journal of Political Science; European Journal of Political Research), methodology (Sociological Methods and Research), interdisciplinary social sciences (Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation), and with renowned publishers (Cambridge UP, 2014, monograph with Kees van Kersbergen).

Vis has obtained several prestigious research grants, including a VENI-grant (2009-2013) for the project ‘Politics of Risk Taking’ and a VIDI-grant (2013-2017) for the project ‘HIGH-RISK POLITICS’. She is editor of the series Changing Welfare States of Amsterdam UP (2010–) and a board member of the Dutch Political Science Association (NKWP, 2009–) and the Netherlands Institute for Government (NIG, 2014-). Vis is also member of the Y oung Academy (De Jonge Akademie, 2014–) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and of Royal Holland Society of Sciences (KHMW, 2015–).
